A Good Dental Health means having healthy teeth and gums, as well as having a beautiful smile to make you look and feel your best !

At HDC, we have a Visual Dental Case Presentation Technology. That's refreshing and comforting, isn't it !

Dental Fees :

We inform patients the approximate range in fees before commencing treatment.
Fees are determined by classification of complex and simple procedures.

Cost of dental treatment :

- Dental fees and charges have been known to be quite high compared to the medical practice.
- This is true , good dental care does cost money but it is money very well spent
- Fees are set by dentists based on length of time needed, difficulty and complexity of treatment, material and laboratory charges.
- Guidelines on fees, produced by the MDC is followed where possible.
- The cost of running a dental practice is expensive. More than half of your dental bill goes into clinic expenses, supplies and lab charges.

Our sincere advice to reduce your dental bills :

- from our experience, dental treatment cost is a concern for most people. Therefore to reduce the cost, you can choose prevention to avoid complex treatment which is expensive.
- Exercise effective daily dental care regime
- Use mouthguard if involved in contact sports
- To prevent is always cheaper than to cure

Preventive dental care for adults and children :

- your dentist will examine your teeth and gums and charts them in your dental records
- any tartar / calculus along your gumline will be removed meticulously during scaling and polishing
- stainings on your tooth surfaces will be cleaned
- fluoride usage is advised either in the form of toothpastes or fluoride application in the clinic
- fissure sealants can be applied onto children and adult teeth to fill up fissures and grooves on the biting surface of teeth, making it easier to keep clean and brush.
- Preventive dental treatment will eventually save you more money in the long run.

Gum disease / Periodontal disease :

- Your set of natural teeth can last a lifetime, however, your teeth are only as good as the surrounding gums that supports them !
- Do you know that gum disease is a major cause of loss of teeth ?
- Most people have some gum disease but are not aware of it
- periodontal means around the tooth and refers to all the tissues which surrounds the tooth - the gums, the fibres that holds the tooth and the socket bone.
- Common signs of gum disease :

" bleeding gums during brushing
" bad breath / halitosis, bad taste inside mouth
" red gum colour and swollen
" gum recession / loss of gum attachment at the neck of the tooth
" teeth becomes loose and more gaps appear between teeth
" gum abscess

- gum disease is caused mainly by poor brushing technique which allows dental plaque to form at the neck of the teeth, causing the gums to bleed during brushing and also later on separate from the teeth. This causes gingivitis / inflammation of the gums.
- Beware ! Gum disease can go unnoticed until it's too late !
- Once the gum at the neck of the tooth is inflamed, swollen and bleed easily, and has lost its attachment, it forms pocketing around the tooth. Bacteria and acid can then attack the supporting socket bone. This will loosen teeth and may result in tooth loss if not treated earlier.

How to prevent gum disease :

- Always make a point to visit your dentist at least twice a year for routine check-ups
- if you have signs of gum disease, consult your dentist on how to improve your brushing techniques
- use soft bristle, small headed toothbrushes
- floss correctly and regularly to remove plaque between your teeth before it hardens into tartar / calculus and irritates your gum. Check with your dentist to see if you are flossing properly to disturb tartar formation.
- use extra small interdental brushes
- Gum disease is preventable, therefore you can avoid unnecessary discomfort and loss of teeth because of gum disease.
- You brush your teeth everyday anyway, so why not do it correctly and keep your teeth for life. We'll help you. We know how.

Cosmetic Dentistry - What is it ?

A branch of dentistry that appreciates beauty and incorporates it in the practice and art of dental treatment with science as the basis. This is dentistry for people who not only want healthy teeth and gums but beautiful smiles that make them look and feel their best.

Professional Teeth Whitening

Over time, our teeth can become stained and appear yellowish. This is a very unfavourable thing to happen to our most valuable and visible asset because our teeth and smile is among the very first thing that people look at when they first meet us. Definitely we would like our first impression to be a good and lasting one with the help of our personal effects like our presentable winning smiles or our fresh-smelling breath or our beautiful shiny white healthy teeth, or some other features.

Teeth can become stained due to the foods that we eat, water that we drink, or pass down features that we inherit from our families, or side effects from medicines that either we consume or our mothers' consume during her pregnancy, or just due to fair colour deterioration with time.

At HDC, we offer Professional Teeth Whitening Procedure called Britesmile Whitening Procedure. To know more, click -------

In summary, Britesmile Whitening Procedure is a one-time procedure that can achieve dramatic and instant result, all done in the clinic by the dentist. The procedure takes about one and a half hours to complete :

- your original teeth shade is recorded and an instant Polaroid close-up picture is taken
- your gum and lips are covered and protected from the whitening gel and light transmissions
- at the end of the procedure, your new brighter teeth colour is recorded and another instant Polaroid picture is taken for easy comparison of the result
- patient can expect a range from 6 to10 shade change

The result may last between one to three years or even longer depending on your dental hygiene maintenance and the type of diet you consume and also exposures to your teeth that comes with your lifestyle.

You can also opt to get the Britesmile Maintenance Kit : either you get the set where you can do your own routine touch-ups in the comfort of your own home, or the set of Britesmile toothpaste and mouthwash. Some patients however, prefers to just come in again for another Britesmile procedure.

Crowns, Bridges and Veneers

These are forms of Cosmetic Dentistry. They can improve, restore and correct your teeth problems dramatically from your original condition. The dentist must really select the case properly and discuss with patients regarding the end results that can be achieved. The patient must thoroughly understand the procedures they are going through and the after care that needs to be done to ensure excellent dental hygiene. Crowns, bridges and veneers are costly, therefore the decision made when considering these treatments must be made wisely by both dentist and patient. These type of treatment are complex procedures on the dentist part, whereas on your part as the patient, you need to understand any limitations of the end-product and commit yourself in taking good care of your dental health to ensure longevity of your crown, bridges or veneers.

Realisation in the importance of dental health and restoration

HDC emphasizes Prevention as the basis of our dental service. As far as possible, we must try to preserve our own natural teeth because with proper maintenance, our teeth can last for our lifetime. Even so, our teeth and gums can be damaged due to many factors unbeknownst to non-dental professionals. Actually, the cause for tooth decay and gum disease is identifiable and therefore preventable. As dental professionals, you can see that most dentist still retain their own natural teeth until their ripe old age. We do know something more than the rest of the community, don't you think ? And we are proud and happy to be here to share that knowledge with you. All you have to do is be a good and responsible patient by regularly attending your routine dental check-ups and practices effective dental hygiene maintenance. Teeth For Life : It Is Achieveable ! Really !

But the reality is, teeth and gum problems are still widespread in our community. Even so, as observed at HDC, the height of awareness of dentistry is encouragingly on the rise. The new generation has become more health conscious, perhaps due to knowledge and new generation and modern parentage.

In recent years, the dental treatment approach has shift towards a more preventive and restorative mode. In our clinic, we are seeing very much less cases for extraction and very much more of preventive and restorative cases. This somewhat shows that the level of dental health awareness has increased. Looks like more people would be able to keep their own natural teeth for much longer in the future. HDC is more than happy to support this favourable development in modern dentistry.

With preventive dentistry as the core of our practice, we believe that the community dental health awareness can be achieved through responsible dental health professionals sharing and imparting their specialities and knowledge by disseminating information pertaining to the support and know-how of Dentistry and dental health maintenance.

Root Canal Therapy (RCT)

As an effort to preserve teeth, even a dying or dead and broken down crown of teeth can still be saved and given a second chance. Tooth extraction is the last choice of treatment and is only done if it is really inevitable and necessary.

Basically, what a Root Canal Therapy means is the canal inside the root of the tooth will be cleaned mechanically by instrumentation and also cleansed by irrigation with special solutions to achieve empty root canal which by the end of the treatment should be sterilized and free from any remnants of infection. The now empty canal of the root will be replaced by substitute material which functions to replace contents of the canal that has been removed earlier and also functions to avoid any leakage of future infection from the surrounding tissues from then onwards. You can assume that your tooth has been mummified so you can further keep the tooth to function.

RCT can be done either in one visit or more, depending on the severity of infection and presence of pus.

Once RCT is completed, the remaining tooth structure will be restored either with an ordinary filling, a crown or a post crown.

A root canal treated tooth can last your lifetime, although failures may also occur due to many contributing factors which all have been explained to patients before treatment started.

Tooth Decay or Tooth Cavity

Are you sure that you do not have dental problem at all ?
Would you say that by never needing to go to a dental clinic for the past several years means that you are free from any dental problems ?
Are you sure that you do not have any dental problems just because you have develop your own defence mechanism to avoid and overcome your existing dental problems by smartly chewing on teeth, away from the problem tooth ?
Are you sure that the rotten and grayish coloured tooth that has so far never given you any problem, will not give you any problem in the near future since it is actually a focus of infection inside your mouth ?
Do you realize that your family or friends are not comfortable talking with you because of your bad breath and the appearance of your teeth and gums ?

Not sure ? Not sure at all ? No idea ?

But most important of all, you must care about how you present yourself in public because good self-image really matters. It can say a lot about you. So make your good positive image work for you. You can start by improving your smile !

You can get all those questions answered by asking a dental professionals. We can be very discreet and understanding. We will do our best to help you overcome your dental problems and fears.

Personal Word from the Doctor

Serving Dentistry since 1988.

A good, healthy set of teeth and a winning smile are the easiest way to make the right and good first impression. It can get you far. Therefore it makes sense to take really good care of them, considering the impact that your teeth and smile can bring.

The practice of dentistry involves working with people and communicating with them. On my part, it involves high technical skills and judgement, and an understanding and appreciation of human behaviour to influence any change that is required for their dental health.

I love being a dentist although common phrases I hear almost every other day is 'I hate going to the dentist !' and 'I don't like dentists !'. Don't worry, we never take it personally. So rest assured, you are in good hands.

I am a dentist. I am also a patient myself. Therefore I know what you, as patients, go through during each visit (fear, pain, anxiety) and I know how to make your experience more tolerable, comfortable and as pleasant as best possible.

My practice plans each patient's treatment schedule and each sessions are not rushed, therefore I am able to give patients more time to address their dental concerns and I am able to listen and really understand your dental status.

I think that is what patients want and I am glad to be able to extend you my professional service.

For the 'dental cowards and phobics', I do cater for these 'special' group of people. It is my pleasure when I am able to do everything I can to manage them and change their perception on modern dentistry for the betterment of their own dental health and overall well-being.

So don't be a stranger to your dentist !

For good dental health,

Dr Halina

Dental terminology / jargon / what it means :

DIAGRAM CROSS SECTION OF TOOTH

Amalgam restorations - silver colored fillings, an alloy of mercury with silver and tin.

Composite restorations - tooth colored fillings made of bis-phenol A and glycidyl methacrylate (BIS-GMA) resins and glass fillers.

Temporary dressing - a type of filling which is used to medicate the tooth that is in pain, must be replaced with a proper filling after the pain is gone.

Inlays - are restorations inside the natural crown of a tooth, made in the laboratory and cemented into place.

Onlays - are restorations covering the biting surface of a tooth.

Endodontics - treatment of the tooth pulp.

Veneers - is a facing, placed on a tooth surface. Either made of composites or porcelain.

Dentures - removable prosthesis to replace teeth.

Immediate dentures - are dentures which are immediately placed inside the patient's mouth right after tooth extraction is done on the same visit. This is to avoid the phase where patient has no teeth while waiting for their denture to be ready. Should be considered as transitional.

Caries, dental - or tooth decay is caused by loss of calcium and phosphate ions from tooth enamels, in the presence of acids produced by carbohydrate fermentation by bacteria in dental plaque.

Dental plaque - sticky film of bacteria on tooth surfaces that can eventually cause gum problems, sensitivity problems, tooth decay and tooth loss. Simple to remove when cleaned the correct way.

Dental calculus / Tartar - the hard, ugly deposits along your gum line which is formed by layers of plaque, over a period of time.

Flouride - is a natural mineral present in very small amounts in many foods and drinking water. Flouridation is when fluoride is added to our water system at level not exceeding one part per million (1 ppm). Flouride helps to make teeth become stronger and more able to withstand dental decay.

Fissure sealants - flowable or high viscosity composites that is applied on the fissures or grooves on the surface of a tooth to get a smoother and flatter surface, making it easier to clean teeth and harder to get tooth decay. Can be done for child and adult. Sealants also has fluoride content.

Saliva - is the liquid that you spit. Saliva protects your dental health from your milk and adult teeth until your old age. Three main actions of saliva : - neutralizes acid attacks on your teeth, flushes out food debris inside your mouth and its calcium, phosphate and fluoride contents help to maintain healthy teeth.

Crowns - a type of restoration either made of composites, porcelain or metal which covers the crown of the one tooth. If the tooth is non-vital and root canal treatment is completed and the remaining tooth structure is not enough to support the crown, then a post is inserted into the root of the tooth to hold the crown.

Bridges - a prosthesis either made of composites, porcelain or metal to replace missing teeth with the support of neighboring teeth and is cemented permanently on the teeth.

Orthodontics - is a branch of dentistry that concerns with the facial growth, development of occlusion / your biting pattern, and also the prevention and correction of any occlusion anomalies.

Teeth sensitivity - sensitive teeth or dentinal hypersensitivity occurs when the protective covering of your teeth, the enamel, wears away. Once the second layer of teeth, dentin, is exposed, it is extremely vulnerable to external stimuli such as heat, cold, sweet and salty food, and brushing, among other things.

How to overcome teeth sensitivity :

- improve on your daily dental care. For example, if the neck of the particular tooth is worn / abraded by your tooth-brushing technique, then alter / improve on it.
- seal with a de-sensitising agent
- use special tooth paste that addresses hypersensitivity problems
- use soft bristle toothbrushes

Halitosis : also known as bad breath. Usually due to bacteria that acts on food residues inside the mouth, and gum disease. Can also be caused by digestive or respiratory disorders, or sinusitis.

How to overcome bad breath :

- brush and floss teeth effectively twice a day. Clean your tongue with a tongue scraper.
- Cleanse the inside of your mouth with a suitable mouthrinse, preferably the ones concocted for halitosis.
- For denture-wearers, clean dentures and existing teeth after each meal. Clean dentures by immersing them in special solutions.
- Try to stop smoking
- Visit your dentist at least twice a year for routine examinations.

Gum disease and tooth decay :

- plaque is the sticky invisible layer on the surface of teeth and contains bacteria. Plaque can cause gum disease. It irritates the gums, making them look red, swollen and can bleed easily.
- Layers and layers of plaque eventually forms the hard version called tartar / calculus which can only be removed by your dentist.
- Gum disease is very dangerous because gum disease does not cause much pain until the very late stages, which by then the teeth may already be loose and too late to be saved.

Tooth decay :

- tooth decay is caused by loss of calcium and phosphate ions from tooth enamels, in the presence of acids produced by carbohydrate fermentation by bacteria in dental plaque.
- Saliva will neutralize the acid slowly but until then your teeth will be susceptible to the acid attack.

Healthy ways for a healthy teeth and gums :

- Eat wisely, cut down on sugar content, starchy food, fizzy drinks and other fermentable carbohydrates.
- Clean teeth at least twice a day. There is a smart way to do this. Ask us how.
- Select proper toothbrush and other dental health products to suit your condition. For example, you might think that a hard bristle toothbrush cleans better but actually the soft ones works better.
- Your technique should be effective, otherwise ask your dentist on how you could improve on it. Those wearing orthodontic braces has special approach on toothbrushing and cleaning.
- Use floss correctly everyday, then it can be beneficial and worth it. A great preventive measure. Slight gum bleeding during flossing is frequently a sign of unhealthy gums. Consult your dentist.
- Use extra small inter dental brushes, in addition to flossing. Proper usage is advised. Rapid improvement of gum disease has been observed.
- Mouthwashes is also very helpful. Choose the correct type for your teeth and gum condition. Use mouthwash as instructed. Read the duration of use carefully. Some mouthwashes must be discarded after a week from the time the cap was opened. Some can even stain your teeth when used longer than is necessary.
- Flouride is very important in dental care. Flouride helps saliva to repair damaged enamel and protects teeth against acid attacks.
- Visit your dentist at least twice a year or as recommended so that minor problems can be treated at an early stage before they become serious. Your dentist will also be happy to share their healthy teeth tips.

Orthodontic treatment, their benefits :

- for better food mastication / chewing
- better digestion and absorption
- more presentable looking smile
- heightened / improved self-confidence
- healthier teeth and gums
- much more easier to clean teeth
- beautiful, winning smile
- feeling better about your overall appearance.

Pregnancy and your child's teeth :

- pregnancy : visit dentist regularly even before your pregnancy so any invasive treatment and x-rays can be avoided during your pregnancy
- inform the dentist if you are pregnant
- due to fluctuating hormones, you may be susceptible to gum disease - sore, swollen or bleeding gums
- eat well balanced diet rich in calcium and phosphorus (milk, cheese, fish) to help the formation of your baby's teeth which starts from the sixth week of pregnancy

- care for child's teeth :
- start a good oral hygiene routine for your child at an early stage
- good oral hygiene helps in good development of speech, chewing and appearance. Healthy teeth and gums can last a lifetime
- milk teeth starts to erupt at six months and usually completes by three years old
- permanent teeth starts to erupt by six years old with the first molar behind the baby teeth. It is very important to clean those molars
- watch your child's diet by reducing sugar intake that can easily cause tooth decay
- brush your child's teeth and gradually teach your child to brush effectively especially before going to bed
- your child's regular dental visit can start by age two and a half
- fluoride (topical or systemic) helps to strengthen and protects teeth from tooth decay
- fissure sealant is applied on the grooves on tooth surfaces to make cleaning easier and prevent decay on those high risk areas
- mouthguard appliance is recommended for those who play contact sports to avoid traumatic injuries to teeth

Dentures :

Your dentist will try their very best to make your dentures feel and look as natural and comfortable as they possibly can. Try your very best to adapt to your new dentures and they can become comfortable in a few days.

When you use new dentures :

- for the first 48 hours, you can expect your saliva flow to increase because your mouth recognize the new dentures as some foreign body / food and your salivary glands generate more saliva as a natural response
- you'll feel that your dentures are big and may make you have a gag reflex
- practice your speech and don't be too conscious about it, it'll always get better in a couple of days
- learn to chew in small bites and chew on both sides at the same time so your dentures does not tilt and dislodge easily
- give your gum some time to rest after the whole day being covered by your dentures. Don't sleep with your dentures on, take them out, clean and immerse them in water or some special solution
- softly brush and massage your gums to stimulate blood flow
- dentures need to be brushed also, and rinse after every meal to avoid plaque accumulation and halitosis / bad breath
- some people have insufficient bone ridge left inside the mouth (due to bone resorption / having lost teeth very early age) to help hold the dentures. They may need the aide of denture adhesives.
- For those who never seem to be able to get used to their dentures, then other options are available like implants, or implanted support for dentures
